Abstract

Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus are prevalent endocrinopathies with a significant impact on cardiovascular health, and their bidirectional relationship has been widely studied. This retrospective study analyzed 100 patients with hypothyroidism in a South American hospital between January 2020 and December 2023, evaluating their risk of diabetes using the FINDRISC score and correlating it with lipid profiles and the degree of hypothyroidism control. The results showed a high prevalence of dyslipidemia, especially in women, with 67% elevated total cholesterol and 63% elevated triglycerides. A significant correlation was observed between uncontrolled hypothyroidism and FINDRISC moderate and high risk scores. The discussion highlights the importance of better clinical control of lipid alterations and the risk of diabetes in patients with hypothyroidism, since both disorders can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications. The conclusions highlight the need for larger studies to confirm these findings and improve the management of these patients, suggesting that early detection and appropriate management can minimize risks and medical complications.
