Abstract

Anatomical terms used in popular speech in Costa Rica are described. This is the result of the meeting of the original civilizations of America with that of the Spanish conquerors; and they have survived for more than 500 years. The importance of the social and cultural position of the community that employs them is pointed out. The difficulty of interpretation that doctors and health professionals have when these individuals come to the consultation is highlighted. This negatively influences the preservation and recovery of health, both individual and public. The relevance of anatomical terms in the communication of peoples and cultures is highlighted.
