In the Salvadoran Social Security Institute (ISSS) through the specialty clinic, there is little data on the population with acromegaly, so this study describes the main characteristics of 40 patients with this pathology treated during 2010. The age range of the group ranged between 21 and 75 years, being mostly women (60%). The clinical manifestations found were: acral and facial growth, headache, visual disorders and arthralgia; with more frequent onset between the second and fifth decades of life. The average time of evolution of the disease to diagnosis was 3.8 years, which is less than that described in the world literature; however, most debuted with macroadenomas and perisellar extension. 95% were approached with initial surgical resection and subsequently most received long- and short-acting somatostatin analogues (27.5% and 22.5% respectively). It was found that 55% of the group did not it had not achieved biochemical control, being more common in women and in the presence of pituitary macroadenomas with some degree of extension. Screening for cardiovascular and colorectal complications was performed in 17.5% and 10% of patients, respectively, with abnormalities reported in most, including one case of advanced colonic cancer. Herself
expects that the information obtained will form the basis for ensuring optimal care and comprehensive patient management with acromegaly
