Prevalence and risk of alcohol and tobacco use in students from 7th to 9th grade in public schools in San Salvador

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco consumption in primary school students in three schools in San Salvador. The study design was cross-sectional with a descriptive approach. The sample was 169 students. The results obtained were the following: the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco consumption was high in the evaluated patterns, where the male gender presented higher percentages than the female gender. The most consumed beverage was beer and the form of tobacco consumption was cigarettes. Most of the students commented that the consumption of alcohol and tobacco is a great risk. For the different patterns of tobacco use, 13 risk factors and 4 protective factors were detected. In the case of alcohol consumption, 5 risk factors and 6 protective factors were detected.
