Periodontal diseases are a public health problem due to their high prevalence, impact on quality of life and the high costs involved in their treatment. Its main factors and indicators are shared with chronic noncommunicable diseases, contributing to their exacerbation and/or development. The objective of this research was to establish the prevalence of periodontal diseases in people between 18 and 60 years of age who consulted at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Evangelical University of El Salvador (FOUEES) in 2017. A quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 289 patients was carried out. files selected by simple random sampling. Among the results stand out: Prevalence of periodontal disease 100%, female 69.20%, periodontitis 55.36%, age group 18-31 years 40.83%, unemployed 30.45%, average schooling 33.22%, poor oral hygiene 71.97%. The prevalence of periodontal disease was high in the population, mostly in women aged 18-31 years, unemployed, with secondary education, from urban areas and poor oral hygiene. By identifying and addressing the most relevant factors, its development could be prevented, which is why the theory and practice of the dental profession must be strengthened to be applied in teaching, assistance and research; such as education and training of human resources in dentistry, standardizing the diagnosis process and case definition, promoting education and motivation campaigns, managing education, promotion and treatment alliances, reinforcing programs and measures in Public Health, conducting research, monitoring and considering other indicators, thus moving from knowledge to the implementation of preventive measures.
