Education must be highlighted as a transcendental function in the life and mission of the Protestant churches. Even though since the middle of the 18th century, in Spain many enlightened people and reformers were convinced that the happiness of the peoples
derived from their education, in El Salvador the education of first letters was the only one that was impartial. During independence and the first years of the Republic, popular education continued to be abandoned altogether, although with a progressive
responsibility towards the municipalities. It would appear, then, the Lancastrian system as a viable alternative to help improve this situation. This system came to interest even the English monarch and spread throughout the world. factors like
the determined support of the British Bible Society and the British and Foreign School Society and the interest of great Latin American leaders such as Bolivar and Miranda, made possible the appearance of the Lancastrian system in Latin America. Diego
(James) Thomson, supported by the British and Foreign School Society, became the main promoter of Lancastrian schools. In El Salvador, the Congress tried to spread the cartilia of Fray Mat(as de Córdova, which contained the Lancastrian method. The Lancastrian system became a sine qua non of education. At the end of the 19th century, mission Protestantism made its appearance in El Salvador. With Protestantism also came education.
