Abstract

This article outlines the methodological design used in a long-term socio-historical study of the Sucio River sub-basin in Quezaltepeque, El Salvador (1524–1950). Using a qualitative approach grounded in the theory of Glaser and Strauss, a deductive coding strategy was adopted, allowing for the application of a priori categories—social groups and the impact of the sub-basin—to a documentary corpus of over 120 historical sources, processed in ATLAS.ti. The sub-basin emerges from the analysis not as a passive context, but as the organizing axis of social, economic, and power relations throughout the colonial and republican periods. The main contribution of the article lies in demonstrating that grounded theory can operate with deductive logic in long-term historical research, offering a structured coding protocol that is transferable to comparative studies of basins in the Mesoamerican region.
