The eternal nature of love in contrast to spiritual gifts: Exegesis of 1 Corinthians 13:8-13
Abstract
Paul corrects abuses regarding spiritual gifts (chapters 12–14 of 1 Corinthians). This abuse led the Corinthians to neglect the practice of love; therefore, Paul devotes a significant section (chapter 13) to affirming that it is useless to exercise spiritual gifts if love is lacking. Specifically, in verses 8–13, the apostle emphasizes the eternity of love in contrast to the gifts, for these will disappear when “the perfect” comes—that is, the coming of Christ and the perfection of all things. This contrast should motivate the Church to prioritize practicing love rather than becoming obsessed with certain spiritual gifts.
